Periodontal Flap Surgery
What is periodontal flap surgery?
Flap surgery is helpful for people who have tartar buildup that is in deep pockets. The procedure involves lifting the gums off of the teeth to remove tartar buildup.
What to expect
Flap surgery is typically done under local anesthesia. A small incision is made to separate the gums from the teeth. The outer gum tissue is gently folded back to give access to the roots and bone supporting the teeth to clean and repair damaged bone. The gum flap is then sewn back into place and covered with gauze to stop bleeding. Your stitches will be removed after a few days.
Recovery
Mild to moderate discomfort may be experienced following the procedure.
Do not smoke.
After 24 hours, rinse with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Change gauze pads regularly.
Take time to relax after surgery as strenuous activity may increase bleeding.
Avoid hard or chewy foods.
Do not lie flat. Keep head elevated.
If you experience swelling, try applying an ice pack to help relieve pain and swelling.
